In response to the situation facing Spirit Airlines, Avianca offers return options with no airfare charge to those who have already flown the outbound segment, have a return ticket with Spirit to their original destination, and those who have been affected. This option is subject to availability and to the conditions of the protection plan.
Passengers may go to the airport on the same day as their flight or, at most, one day before, to be reallocated on Avianca flights, subject to availability and based on order of arrival. This alternative applies to passengers holding tickets issued —subject to verification— with travel dates between May 2 and May 16, 2026.
This protection plan applies to travel between the following cities:
Between Fort Lauderdale and:
- Armenia
- Barranquilla
- Bogotá
- Cali
- Medellín
- Cartagena
- Guayaquil
- Lima
- Guatemala City
- San Pedro Sula
- Comayagua (Palmerola International Airport)
- San José, Costa Rica
Between Orlando and:
- Medellín
- Guatemala City
- San Pedro Sula
For the purposes of this plan, the airports of Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Orlando are considered common points within the same area. This means that, if there is no availability from or to the originally scheduled airport, travel may be arranged from or to any of these airports. Flights may operate as nonstop or with one or more connections, depending on availability at the time of booking, always within the routes covered by the protection plan, provided the passenger agrees to assume any costs related to waiting times at connection points.
- This Protection Plan (hereinafter, the “Plan”) applies only at the airport to passengers with travel dates between May 2 and May 16, 2026.
- This Plan applies to passengers affected by the suspension of Spirit Airlines’ operations who have already begun their journey, meaning they have taken at least one segment of their reservation with Spirit or with any other airline, and who, having their return flight scheduled with Spirit, require transportation back to their point of origin.
- Passengers must present themselves at the airport on the same day as their original flight or up to one (1) day prior.
- The passenger shall present at the airport the ticket or boarding pass demostrating that the journey commenced with Spirit or another airline.
- Acceptance on the flights will be subject to Aerocivil validating the existence of the corresponding reservation with Spirit. This condition will apply only to flights originating from or destined to Colombia.
- All taxes, fees, charges, administrative fees, and any other mandatory charges applicable to the trip shall be borne by the passenger wishing to benefit from this Protection Plan.
- Ticket transfer or name changes are not permitted.
- Passengers benefiting from the Plan are solely responsible for meeting all travel requirements, including confirmed onward or return tickets required at the destination or transit points. Such tickets must be valid and must not depend on this Protection Plan.
- Acceptance on flights will be granted on a first‑come, first‑served basis and is subject to seat availability at the time of flight closure. Once the flight is closed, seats will be assigned according to availability. If assignment is not possible, the passenger will be placed on a waiting list and informed of the next available flights, under the same conditions set forth herein.
- Passengers accepted on a flight under this Plan will be entitled to carry one (1) carry‑on bag and one (1) checked bag up to 23 kg, subject to the dimensions, weight limits, and conditions established by Avianca for the Classic fare.
- The transport of checked baggage, as well as any additional baggage services required by the passenger, is conditional, meaning that their carriage or effective provision depends on availability and compliance with applicable conditions. No compensation or home delivery of baggage will be provided if the baggage cannot be transported on the same flight as the passenger.
- Any excess baggage or additional services or ancillaries must be fully assumed and paid by the passenger, and will be charged according to Avianca’s applicable fares, without any discount.
- Alternative routings through common or connecting points may be offered if there is no availability on the original route. For connecting itineraries, passengers should consider that taxes, fees, contributions, or charges may apply in accordance with current regulations, and such charges must be assumed by the passenger.
- In the case of connecting itineraries, acceptance on the initial flight will depend on seat availability across all flights that make up the itinerary.
- The passenger must complete and sign the authorization and acceptance form for the transportation service – Protection Plan, as well as the authorization for the processing of personal data. To do so, the passenger must scan the corresponding QR codes available at the airport counter and provide proof of submission confirmation.
- Passengers requesting special services (e.g. physical or sensory conditions, service dogs, medical conditions, wheelchairs, portable oxygen concentrators, or portable dialysis equipment) and/or requiring wheelchair assistance will be subject to availability and will be managed at the time of boarding confirmation.
